Freddy’s is a longtime artist & activist local community gathering and showcase space, threatened with destruction by developer Bruce Ratner, in conjunction with the MTA, the Empire State Development Board, Mayor Bloomberg, Governor Pataki and Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz. Ratner’s proposal seeks over 1.02 Billion dollars in taxpayer subsidized funds for the now $4.2 billion Atlantic Yards development. It includes 16 high rises, one taller than the Williamsburg Clocktower, and a 19,000-seat arena that would house the New Jersey Nets, in which Ratner is part owner. The proposal would also pave over vital streets around one of Brooklyn’s most heavily congested intersections of Flatbush & Atlantic avenues and could sit on top on Freddy’s and the Prospect Heights neighborhood and cast a large shadow over Fort Greene. Currently the only way for this proposal to succeed is if eminent domain is invoked on the businesses and people who live and work in the proposed development footprint.
